I think I learned this from my sisters who practice the Yoruba tradition—that your work here is not just to heal the people who come after you, but to heal your ancestors. Imagine how we have to reconstruct our thinking to allow for this viewpoint: the physics or the metaphysics of us being here on this planet now, while the past is simultaneously occurring.
—Cherrìe Moraga, Chicana playwright in an interview with Adelina Anthony, BOMB Magazine, Americas Issue, 2007
Over the course of many centuries, peoples throughout the Americas have shared, traded, infiltrated and disseminated valuable aspects of their cultures, including language, art, music, and religion. Yet, even as this still occurs, each nation continues to express its culture in its own unique manner. During a time when miles of 10-foot fences between countries are planned and English-only laws have been implemented, the need for mutual respect and understanding is clearly evident.
Since 1999, BOMB Magazine has published an annual Americas Issue, featuring compelling interviews between Latin American and Caribbean artists, writers, and musicians, as well as original translations of poetry and fiction. The Americas Issue contains the single national forum of critical discourse about art and writing between Latin America, the Caribbean Basin, and the United States, bringing their traditions and artistic excellence to a nationwide readership.
BOMB’s next Americas Issue is dedicated to the culture of Brazil, and will be available December, 2007. For interviews and excerpts from past Americas Issues, see below.
